Marrakech is one of those destinations that should be on everyone's bucket list. It is stunningly unique and filled with lots of things to do and see. There's so many things that make Marrakech so wonderful, so I've written up the ten must-dos in order to have that authentic Moroccos experience (well, in my opinion at least!).
1. Stay in a Riad
Number one has to be to stay in a Moroccan Riad during your time in Marrakech. Translated into 'garden' from Arabic, a Riad is basically a traditional Moroccan house that has a courtyard. Many of the traditional riads in Marrakech that were once crumbling have now been transformed into beautiful hotels for travellers to stay in. My favourite has to be Riad l'Orangerie! But no matter where you stay, you'll always leave as one of the family.
2. Eat as much Tagine as you can!
I can't even describe how good the tagine is in Marrakech. Some of the best places to get tagine is Nomad, Cafe Des Spices and Atay Cafe. Believe me you won't regret it.
3. Get Henna at a Henna Art Cafe
You can't really get more traditional than getting henna drawn on. Henna is made from a plant based paste that is applied to the hands or feet in beautiful patterns, after it dries and flakes off you're left with a gorgeous stained pattern. Dotted around the souq are henna art cafes where you can grab some food and also get some henna done.
4. Try an avocado-date-orange juice
Mmm I dream of this juice sometimes, it was that good! The perfect way to refresh after walking around in the heat. You can grab one at any cafe or restaurant! Try avoid stalls on the road to protect against getting sick.
5. Haggle at the Souks
A skill I have yet to master is haggling. But it's the only way to get a reasonable price, and the shop-keepers are more offended if you don't try and haggle! Remember, their starting price is always 3x higher than it should be.
6. Eat on a roof terrace
I think I must have dined at a roof terrace every night of my stay in Marrakech, there is just so much choice, you'll never run out of options! Overlooking the bustling streets below, roof terraces are the perfect way to escape and chill out for a bit while enjoying the best food, and an avocado-date-orange juice 😉
7. Take a day trip to Atlas Mountains
Something I didn't get around to doing on my trip to Marrakech was taking a day trip to the surrounding Atlas Mountains. But I've heard great things about trekking up, especially if you're one for a bit more adventure during travelling.
8. Wander Jemma El Fena at night
I have to admit this must-do wasn't the most enjoyable, but I still believe everyone should experience it at least one. Jemma El Fena is a market place in central Marrakech where there are loads of stalls selling food, juices and souvenirs. But as night falls, the street vendors tend to get a bit more pushy and as two girls travelling by themselves, they were a little more loud when seeking out attention. But the food looked scrumptious, and if you're just firm they will eventually go away.
9. Eat a Moroccan pancake
I experience a Moroccan pancake during my first breakfast in Marrakech, when I picked it up and wondered what it actually was. They're crispy, flaky, and fluffy all at the same time, and with a bit of jam spread over them, they are the most delicious thing ever!
