How To Deal With Negativity

Some people seem to naturally have the most negative outlook on life. No matter how many positive aspects there are to a situation or good things they have to look forward too, there is just no changing their minds. Also, I want to note that theres a difference between being realistic and being negative - a negative attitude never solves anything or makes anyone feel any better. I've had a person like this in my life recently, and unfortunately they aren't leaving it any time soon. Whilst the obvious thing to do when you're faced with such intense negative energy is to get as far away from it or them as possible, but sometimes that just can't happen. So, I've learnt to try and deal with it the best way I can, and try as hell to not let it affect me. I wanted to share these tips and hopefully it can help someone else in a similar situation as me.

1. Overcompensate

Whenever I'm surrounded by a negative person, and we're discussing something and they take the pessimistic approach, I like to overcompensate with positive vibes. Whether thats out loud or just in my mind. But no matter what, try not to get overwhelmed with negativity because you're not going to benefit from taking on board those kind of thought processes.

2. Give It Time

While you can't always get rid of the person, you can leave a situation where they're being negative. Giving them and yourself some space and time can help loads and just let everyone move on a bit from the topic at hand. That way you can change subjects and just avoid bringing up something you already know you differ in opinion over.

“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.”

3. Ignore It

Easier said than done I know, especially if you're as stubborn as I am, but often, its better to just choose your battles. Its not always worth it to argue or point out their negativity or complaining nature if its about something small. Things can escalate quickly and sometimes its just not worth it. So it ought be better to just breathe and let it go or just leave the situation.

4. Surround Yourself With Positive People

Just because your stuck with a negative person (maybe they're a family member), you should pick your friends better and choose only positive people to surrounded yourself with. These are the people who will bring you back up and remind you that everything isn't all so bad. They can also ground you in the times that negativity might be taking over your mind.

This was great – also love that you talked about being realistic vs being negative. I definitely think giving someone who is being negative some space can work wonders so you can both re-evaluate. I just read the story behind your blog name on your About page btw and I absolutely love it!

Really good points here and I think what you said about giving it time is especially important!
